A Tribute to Ann

Created by Trevor 11 years ago
Ann Dickinson was born on 22 August 1945 in St Mary’s Hospital, Bramley Leeds to parents Ernest and Nelly. She was one of four children having 2 sisters and one brother. Sadly only one sister, Lynne, now remains. As a child she lived in the Hunslet area and attended the local school where she excelled at netball and was captain of the school team. At the age of sixteen she was in a local cafe with her friend when two young men walked in. Ann turned to her friend and said I´m having the blond one! This turned out to be Trevor and they got talking and started seeing each other on a regular basis. Trevor was taken to meet Ann’s parents and soon moved in to live with the family. This relationship was not to last and Trevor and Ann split up and went their separate ways. Trevor moved to Exeter where he married and had two children, Tony and Susan. Ann stayed in Leeds and worked for Schweppes in Leeds and Scopos Textiles in Dewsbury. Ann met her first husband and they had four children Darren, Debbie, Mandy and Philip. After 15 years Trevor moved back to Leeds and a mutual friend told him that a lady he knew wanted to meet him. Trevor asked her name and was told Ann. Trevor said he knew many Anns so did she have a surname? Ann Dickinson. and Trevor immediately knew who it was. They got together again and in March 1979 they were married. You may think that would be a great time of celebration for all the children to be together at their parents wedding but no. Trevor and Ann sent the children off to school as normal and then went out to get married. It was only when the children arrived home and found a party in full swing that they were told of the marriage. Trevor and Ann went on to have two more children Lee and Keeley. When I asked how many children there were the debate was between 8 and 9. This is because granddaughter Tara was brought up by Trevor and Ann as their daughter and Tara called them Mum and Dad. At the latest count Ann and Trevor have 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren between them, Family holidays were almost always taken at Bridlington and eventually they considered moving there. But first they knew they must ask their children. They were all of one opinion – you don’t need to ask – let’s go! When I asked about hobbies I was introduced to the art of the quickdraw shooting. Ann was quite proficient and she and Trevor would travel around the North of England entering competitions. Trevor had to be involved as Ann wanted him to beat a lady from Liverpool she wanted to see beaten! At the time it earned her the nickname of Midnight. Up to two years ago Ann had never been abroad as she had a great fear of flying. however Darren and Sarah had moved to Spain 7 years ago and persuaded mum and dad to come and see for themselves. Ann also had a great love for Formula One racing and hated to miss a race on the television. She was a great fan of Lewis Hamilton and didn’t like Vettel who she hoped would spin off the track but not hurt himself. One of the highlights of Ann’s life was to hear her “daughter” Tara sing and she and Trevor followed around England to her singing engagements. Ann would help Tara dress and get ready whilst Trevor acted as roadie and taxi driver. Sadly once here in Spain Ann’s mobility became restricted and she took to riding an electric scooter. On one occasion she was seen hurtling round a corner towards a neighbour who decided she looked like Madge from the Benidorm TV programme. The name stuck and a sticker soon appeared on her scooter proclaiming her name as Madge. Ann had a great gift for making friends and loved to be with friends and family. Whilst she liked the nickname of Madge she wasn’t as keen on the other names she acquired including “The Dragon” which would result in a slap for Darren whenever he used it. Other names disliked were Grandma, Nan and Granny. And finally I should mention that her name is spelt without an E and you would add to the dislikes if you tried to add one. Ann was much loved and will be missed by all her family.
